The CASS Scheme provides a framework of five different assessment types, covering functional safety:

• Type 1: Non Application Specific Component Assessment
• Type 2: Application Specific Systems Assessment
• Type 3: Operations and Maintenance Assessment
• Type 4: Safety Requirements Assessment
• Type 5: Functional Safety Capability Assessment

CASS is an initiative designed to provide an overall safety framework, which includes the use of recognised safety standards and competent assessors. The objective of CASS is to develop a conformity assessment scheme meeting the requirements of IEC 61508. This scheme will enable the safety systems industry (manufacturers, integrators and end users) to collaborate in order to improve its competitive position.
